From Humble Beginnings to an Enduring Legacy

Guided by vision. Defined by stewardship.

Bernard Chiu’s journey began in Hong Kong, where he grew up with modest means and developed an early appreciation for hard work. As a young man, he spent long days working in a factory—an experience that instilled discipline, resilience, and a hands-on understanding of how things are made. It was there that his instinct for design, engineering, and craftsmanship first began to take shape. Driven by ambition and a desire to create, he came to the United States, settling in Fall River, Massachusetts, where he began building a life grounded in opportunity and purpose.

In just a few short years, he achieved extraordinary success in sales, helping to drive rapid growth and momentum within the company. Drawing on the practical foundation he developed early on, he became convinced he could build something better. In 1989, he founded Duracraft Corporation, where he invented, engineered, and secured more than 100 patents, propelling the company into a position of market leadership. He took Duracraft public and later sold it to Honeywell, marking the beginning of a new chapter—one defined by a broader vision of ownership and long-term value.

He went on to establish Upland Capital, focusing on investments distinguished by character, quality, and enduring appeal. His first acquisition, 745 Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay, set the tone for a portfolio shaped by thoughtful stewardship. This was followed by the development of Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club and a growing collection of properties across Greater Boston and the New England coast—reflecting a deep appreciation for coastal landscapes and island life.

That affinity often drew him to Martha’s Vineyard, where he would walk along North Water Street, passing the Harbor View Hotel—a place he long admired for its iconic presence overlooking the harbor. Over time, he began to see beyond what the hotel had been, recognizing what it could become. With care, intention, and vision, he believed there was an opportunity not only to preserve its legacy, but to elevate it in a way that honored its past while enhancing its future.

When the opportunity to acquire the property quietly emerged, he approached it with a deep sense of responsibility. In 2018, Bernard Chiu purchased the Harbor View Hotel and undertook a comprehensive restoration—one guided by a commitment to craftsmanship, detail, and enduring quality. The result is a renewed landmark, thoughtfully reimagined to reflect both its storied history and its full potential as one of New England’s most distinguished coastal destinations.

From humble beginnings to stewarding a portfolio of exceptional properties, his story is defined by vision, resilience, and a lasting respect for place.
